Android 10 is out and Google has kept its promise as of this September announcing Android 10 on Android TV until the end of the year. After taking a while for Android 9 Pie in order to arrive also on Android TV devices, this time Google delivered in time the latest version of Android. As Android TV becomes day by day more popular so is Google’s plans for the platform.
“When Android TV was first introduced in 2014, we set out to bring the best of Android into the connected home on the TV,” Google wrote in their Android TV OS blog post. “We worked closely with the developer community to grow our content and app ecosystem and bring users the content they want. Since then, we’ve seen tremendous momentum with OEM and operator partners as well as consumer adoption worldwide.”
Nexus Player Evolution – The ADT-3
To make sure developers have the ability to build and test Android TV app implementations on Android 10 prior to rollout, Google introduced a new, developer-focused streaming media device called ADT-3.
With a quad-core A53, 2GB of DDR3 memory and 4Kp60 HDR HDMI 2.1 output, Google designed this pre-certified TV dongle with updates and security patches to help developers design for the next generation of Android TV devices. That is extremely helpful for third-party manufacturers like Nvidia, Xiaomi, Sony, etc but also for app developers. But do not expect to be able to get one as a consumer. The super small device is only for developers. And as more and more people are wishing for a Pixel TV device, for now the only real device that delivers all the latest updates is still the Nvidia Shield TV.

The 2015 Nvidia Shield TV came from the future. But the New Nvidia Shield TV 2019 came from…the past!
Before getting into the video I need to say 2 things. The 1st is that I am a big Nvidia Shield TV fan and I am very disappointed into making this video and 2nd that I already own 2 Nvidia Shield TV devices: The nvidia Shield TV 2015 and the Nvidia Shield TV PRO. Both have been serving me daily with great success and while they are top performers, in these 4 years almost 5 to be exact, I loved them even more. That is because as any device, especially a streaming / gaming device, had some minor issues but with the constant updates Nvidia has fixed everything and added even more. The Nvidia support on both devices has been incredible and no other company has ever done such an amazing work on supporting their devices. With every update they keep up with Android’s latest security patches and keep improving the performance while also adding new and exciting features. And one more thing that needs to be said, is that the Nvidia Shield TV has a great community that has an active part on improving the device. The Nvidia team gives big importance to the community and they always consider opinions and requests in order to deliver the best support in the streaming and cable cutting community. Without Nvidia, Android TV would never be so great at this point of time.
Nvidia Shield TV 2015 version
As mentioned before, the 2015 Shield TV really came from the future. With a stellar performance that was not even close to the next streaming devices that were powered by Amlogic, AllWinner or Rockchip SoC’s. That was thanks to an exceptional GPU with 256 CUDA cores, the Tegra X1 CPU, 3 GB of RAM, 2 X USB 3.0, micro USB 2.0, SD card slot, IR receiver, HDMI 2.0b, Gigabit Ethernet and Dual Band AC WiFi a 16GB SSD for the “normal version” or a 500GB hd for the PRO version, the 2015 Shield was a device made by aliens!
2017 Update
Then unfortunately with the update of the device we noticed also some minor cut backs. So, we lost the SD card slot and the micro USB for the 16GB version of Nvidia’s Shield TV 2017, that remained only to the PRO version until we lost also the PRO version completely. The remote control passed from a rechargeable battery to a 2 X CR-2032 3V battery which for some people was better, for me personally wasn’t an improvement, I hate it when I need to get new batteries when I can easily charge the device every now and then.
The New 2019 Nvidia Shield TV
And now the brand new Nvidia Shield TV 2019 comes out in two versions. A $150 Nvidia Shield TV which is essentially a cylindrical TV Dongle which I would have loved if it was 50-80$ cheaper even though it lacks a USB port and comes with 2GB of RAM and a merely 8GB of internal storage. The Nvidia Shield TV PRO on the other hand still lacks in everything if compared with the 2015 model except for the new CPU Tegra X1+, the addition of Dolby Vision and the new feature the AI Upscale. While the AI upscale and Dolby Vision are both great features, I don’t think it is something that is worth upgrading from my 2015 model. You get the same small SSD of 16GB (hello!? This 2019!!!) The new CPU on the other part is faster and Nvidia claims that is about 25% faster than the previous generation. While going through various benchmarks that can be easily found online, the actual difference seems to be less. At best at around 10% but main thing is that the real-life performance is actually the same. And overall as a device compared with the 2015 model, we lost the included gamepad, the SD card slot (which for some reason is available only to the small model) which was really handy to have. Now if you do not have a Nvidia Shield TV then by all means, the 2019 model is a great buy for $199. You can have an incredible experience in streaming and of course gaming with the Nvidia Games is absolutely phenomenal. Also, it is worth mentioning, as I have already written to an article on my website Google Stadia will also launch too. But at the same time I think that the 2015 would have been a better choice if it was available in the market, even at the same price. Streaming and gaming performance would be the same, you would have more connectivity options as long as the Dolby Vision addition is not that important to you.
The positive about the Shield TV 2019
What it is a great addition on both 2019 Shield TV and Shield TV PRO is the new remote control. While I may not love the Toblerone looks of it, it seems much easier to use and with some extra buttons that are greatly appreciated. And this time, at least the batteries are AAA that can be found way easier than the CR-types. My only objection is that the appreciated remote finder would work with a physical button on the device, instead from the UI which means you still need a remote to find your remote!? But great news is that the new remote control will be also sold separately for $29.99 and works with older models as well. When it comes to Nvidia you have to give it to them. Even though they launch new products, they still support exceptionally the older models as well. While I will not upgrade to the new Nvidia Shield TV 2019, I will still suggest it as a best buy because it blows the competition. But I am also disappointed since I was definitely was expecting more. Maybe with the launch of the upcoming Nintendo Switch, with which they usually share the same SoC, we will get another device from the future. But for now, I’m gonna stick with my older models which I expect to gain value in the used marketplace too!
What do you think?
Will you upgrade to the new Shield TV and if yes to which model? Also if you are new to the amazing world of Android TV, will the new models be your next companion?
https://dimitrology.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/I-Will-NOT-Get-The-New-Nvidia-Shield-TV-2019.jpg10801920Dimitrologyhttps://dimitrology.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/WEBSITE-LOGO-2020-SMALL.pngDimitrology2019-11-05 21:38:152019-11-05 21:40:39This is why I will not buy the New Nvidia Shield TV 2019
Nvidia Shield TV pro and Shield TV Dongle 2020 model
We all heard rumours, we all saw some leaks but this time is official. We have the first official leaks of the two Nvidia Shield TV 2020 models that were pubblished by mistake on Amazon. And as a matter of fact we will have two different models. The first almost identical to the previous models as far as aesthetics are concerned and the second it is Nvidia’s response to the Amazon Firestick.
Nvidia Shield TV PRO 2020
Starting at $199 the brand new NVIDIA Shield TV Pro 2020 is powered by the Nvidia’s proprietary CPU, the Tegra X1+ processor. NVIDIA claims that it makes the SHIELD TV Pro 25 percent faster than its predecessor. The Tegra X1+ is now paired with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage as well.
On the back of the New Shield TV Pro 2020 we find 2 X USB 3.0, an HDMI 2.0, a Gigabit Ethernet port and the same power in socket.
In addition to the new Tegra X1+ SoC, the SHIELD TV Pro expands the HDR support of the SHIELD TV with the inclusion of Dolby Vision HDR support along with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital Plus. Another interesting feature is the HD to 4K upscaling using Artificial Intelligence. That is something that personally can’t wait to try since it looks very promising and this is Nvidia we are talking about.
Nvidia Shield TV Dongle
And here comes at $179 also the NVIDIA Shield TV Dongle. In a very compact device Nvidia brings the same CPU and same capabilities of the Nvidia Shield TV Pro, a part from the 2 X USB 3.0 and adds also a micro SD. Other than the AC WiFi as the bigger brother, the dongle will also have in the sam super-compact device a built-in power supply so essentialy you just need to attach the power cable to the device. Of course being a powerful device that it is, it will not be powered just by a USB cable as the Amazon Firestick. The perfomance gap is immense amaong the two devices as it is also the price.
New Remote Control
Both devices share the same remote control. I was a huge fan of the first remote control. The device and build quality was top notch (especially the model with the re-chargable battery) and it was only lacking in the volume department. That touch control was cool but in all honesty not so practical. In a bold move, Nvidia decided to rebuild the remote and the design feels strange in some extent. Instead of building on top of the very loved remote they decided to play it safe while adding a lot of buttons and dedicating a button to Netflix too. This time the remote comes with AAA batteries and also supports backlight. Great the addition of a remote finder so you will never lose your remote again. I will not share more on my feelings on the remote until I use it because knowing Nvidia I believe it is better than it looks.
Nvidia Shield TV 2020 Price and Availablity
As metioned before, the two models come at a very interesting price. The Nvidia Shield TV pro sales for $199 which is the same price as the Nvidia Shield TV when it first launched 4 years ago. The Nvidia Shield TV Dongle will beat the price of the predecessor for $179 which is the price that the “old” model costs right now on Amazon. Both devices will launch on October 28th and I can’t wait to test them both. The devices were both list on Amazon but now the listing has been removed.

The new flagship Android TV Box by Beelink is the GT KING PRO. That added, final “PRO” is what really distinguishes the device as long as the model name is concerned from the Beelink GT KING. We have talked in a live stream and also reviewed the GT KING by Beelink that offers a great experience and performance. But now the company has decided to release another flagship device, this one more dedicated to the …audiophiles! In fact the Beelink GT KING PRO isn’t a re-designed device, nor should you panic if you just bought the prior. The difference is in the audio compartment where it outstands the competition for even better audio.
Metal Case
The GT KING PRO has another difference with the GT KING. Now comes with a full metal body, an alloy case that is even better optimized for cooler temperatures. That should also give a boost into performance making it even a little more performing than the (almost) twin model.
GT KING PRO Specs
The GT KING PRO version comes with the Amlogic S922X-H Hexa-core CPU as well as a Hexa-core ARM G52 MP6 GPU for optimal performance. It is as a matter of fact the fastest Android TV Box in the market (not to be confused with Android TV where the Nvidia Shield TV is still the leader). Powered by Android 9.0 Pie, comes also with 4GB of DDR4 and 64GB of internal storage and Dual Band WiFi 2G and 5G. In addition to the GT KING we have now integrated the ESS9108 32bit audio DAC chip for audio enhancement that promises us the lossless sound that Beelink promotes with this device.
Connectivity
On the back of the device we find an AV out, a Gigabit 1000M Ethernet port, HDMI 2.1, the DC input and a power button which a lot of users were asking for. A peculiar addition is the RS232 port which may be an excellent tool for industrial use or a developer but with no real purpose for the average home user, at least that I can think of. On the sides we find 4 USB 3.0 (one of which is also OTG) and a micro SG card slot. The lack of a SPDIF may be a disappointing feature for some people since the device is oriented mostly to the lovers of high-end audio.
DTS Listen And Dolby Audio
Beelink GT-King Pro features DTS listen and Dolby audio decoding, that offer high-end Hi-Fi lossless sound quality for an immersive experience. The TV box supports DTS listen and Dolby Audio decoding technology. Two dedicated processors, according to the manufacturer, will provide Hi-Fi sound without loss of sound quality.
Buy The GT KING PRO On Sale
The best offer in order to get the GT KING PRO comes from Gearbest by using the coupon GBCNGTKINGPRO and is valid until October 6th for $134.99 / 125€ / £113 and you can find it here. And you can always check the “classic” model with those LEDs and the plastic case which is still a great device with almost identical performance. And since we talked about sales, a great tablet is also on special offer and it sells like bread. The Teclast T30, a 10.1 inch 4G/LTE tablet with a massive 8000mAh battery and Dual Band WiFi is now offered just for $199.99 / 183.00€ / £164.40 which is a great price! Roku has officially presented to the public the Roku 2019 lineup of streaming devices. The two most popular devices by Roku are the Roku Ultra and the revamped Roku Express. Both are popular for different reasons since they are also prices on the two extremes.
ROKU Express +
Starting at $29.99 the Roku Express is the most affordable Roku device and is intended for the first time users that get in touch with this new world. It can only stream in HD, so no 4K. This version is smaller even than the previous version, which quite frankly was already small.
ROKU Ultra 2019
The Ultra on the other hand looks exactly the same as the previous model and it is priced for $99.99. Not that pricey for the flagship device of Roku. On the inside though, now is powered by a faster quad-core CPU and more memory. The company states that the Roku Ultra is 17 percent faster when launching channels and up to 30 percent when loading apps. Also the remote has changed a little by introducing 2 fully-customizable shortcut buttons (buttons 1 and 2).
On the back of the device we find an Ethernet port, microSD slot and USB port as well. The “lost remote” button is also present which is beloved by a lot of users.
Roku Ready To Extend Overseas
While Roku’s popularity goes through the roof right now in the US, they didn’t received the same attention overseas. That is about to change since Roku is determined to extend their global presence. The new Roku Express, Premiere and Streaming Stick are coming to Latin America and the UK as a first attempt. More will also follow.
Set sleep timers on Roku TVs: Roku TV customers can use their voice remote or Roku mobile app to quickly set a sleep timer on their TV by saying things like “Go to sleep at 11 p.m.”
Search by movie quotes: Enjoy finding movie results by searching for the top quotes from thousands of popular movies across the Roku platform.
4K in Roku search: Use Roku Voice to say “4K movies” to see results for a variety of popular 4K movies. Entering a text search for “4K” will now return results including the 4K Movies & TV Zone.
Support for Roku Media Player: Customers who use the Roku Media Player to play their personal music, movies and photos can now use Roku Voice to find, play and control stored files by using commands such as “Play,” “Skip,” and more.
Control multiple Roku devices with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant: Customers who use Alexa-enabled devices and/or Google Assistant to control their Roku device can now control multiple Roku devices in their homeDirect-to-playback. “Play Brooklyn Nine Nine.” Hulu opens and starts playing immediately.
Roku vs Android TV vs Apple vs Amazon
It is getting always harder to compete in the living room set top box each day. With the already established Android TV lineups which keeps growing and receiving a lot of love from the big boys and Amazon, the addition of Disney+ and Apple+ and a mix of other players, the game for the TV Box will be a hard one to compete. But that is all for the best of the consumer and I personally love it. Google already plans to release Google Stadia to the Android TV, Apple is also ready to launch Apple Arcade on the Apple TV and who knows what else should we expect in the year 2020 that looks that will be the year of the TV Box / Set Top Box.

If you are looking for a great deal in Android TV OS then the time is right to get one of the best devices for way less. I am talking about the Xiaomi Mi Box that now sales for just $49.99 or 45.25€ on Gearbest in a flash sale. The offer is limited to the available devices and will not repeat.
As a frequent user of the Xiaomi Mi Box I can highly recommend it. The specific model is considered the older version of Xiaomi Mi Box S which basically is the same model. The small differences in the remote control, design of the external housing and the remote will mean nothing to most users. As a matter of fact I still prefer the “old” version of the remote way better than the new version which seems a little cheap in comparison with the previous.
Hardware Analysis And Differences
Hardware-wise the devices are identical. The only reason Xiaomi has done an updated version is mainly the issues they faced with the software updates. And in order to come clean, they preferred to update the whole Xiaomi Mi Box brand. They both are powered by an Amlogic S905X g40bit CPU with 4 cores at 2.0GHz, a Mali GPU 450, 2GB DDR3 RAM and Internal Memory of 8GB (eMMC). The 1 x USB 2.0, HDMI output and the AV output. The Mi Box S supports the Chromecast Ultra instead of the standard Chromecast of the Mi Box and a slighter newer version of Bluetooth.
Considering the hardware, performance and overall value, the Xiaomi Mi Box is an amazing deal. With this Xiaomi Mi Box sale for just under $50, is the best Android TV OS device you can get and let’s not forget, the most affordable device if you are looking for a Netflix HD / UHD compatible device! If you want more on the Xiaomi Mi Box devices, you can also check my review of the Xiaomi Mi Box S with a small comparison to the previous model here: https://dimitrology.com/xiaomi-mi-box-s-4k-hdr-android-tv-box-review-benchmark.

So you wanna know which is the difference between bits vs bytes? Keep reading below and you can figure out what broadband speed you have and how fast it really is.
Connection speeds and data sizes are measured differently, but people tend refer to them both as ‘gigs’, ‘gigas’, ‘megs’ or ‘megas’. The problem is that the word ‘gigs’ refers to two very different values: gigabits and gigabytes. But aren’t they the same thing?
The answer is no! There’s a big difference between a bit vs a byte. A byte is eight times bigger than a bit (1 byte = 8 bits). This means that one gigabyte is eight times bigger than one gigabit and a megabyte is eight times bigger than a megabit too. You can learn more on each by visiting the Bytes or Bits article on Wikipedia.
Bits, bytes and internet speed
Now let’s talk about how this relates to your internet speed.
Data sizes are usually measured in ‘bytes’, and internet speeds are measured in ‘bits’. Based on the file size and your connection speed, you can estimate how long it will take you to download something.
Let’s say you find a file online that is 20 megabytes (MB) in size, and you want to download it using your 20 megabit per second (Mbps) broadband connection. This won’t take one second; it will take eight seconds (eight times one second). That’s because a megabyte is eight times bigger than a megabit. So in theory, with a perfect speed, it should take eight seconds to download.
How can I tell a bit from a byte?
That’s easy even when it’s written. A byte is an uppercase ‘B’ and a bit is a lowercase ‘b’. If it says GB, all capitals, then it is a gigabyte. If it says Gb, then it is a gigabit. The only exception to this is the symbol for kilobit, which is ‘kb’, all lowercase and KB all uppercase for kilobyte.
An easy way to remember which value is bigger is the rule that an uppercase ‘B’ is larger than a lowercase ‘b’, also a byte is larger than a bit.
Unit multiples of a bit and a byte
While there are many different file sizes, most of us only need to know a little bit of prefixes. Here are the most common in the SI (metric system) which is the most used in computer science.
KB, MB, GB, TB, PB – A kilobyte (KB) is 1,024 bytes. A megabyte (MB) is 1,024 kilobytes. A gigabyte (GB) is 1,024 megabytes. A terabyte (TB) is 1,024 gigabytes. A petabyte (PB) is 1,024 terabytes.
kb, Mb, Gb, Tb, Pb – A kilobit (kb) is 1,024 bits. A megabit (Mb) is 1,024 kilobits. A gigabit (Gb) is 1,024 megabits. A terabit (Tb) is 1,024 gigabits. A petabit (Pb) is 1,024 terabits.
In conclusion: There are eight bits in a byte, so to translate from one to the other, you can multiply or divide by eight. Also as an example, if you want to download 100 MB on a 100 Mbps connection, it will take eight seconds.
