It’s been more than a month since our last “preview” release, so it’s time we boxed up something new for everyone.

The usual drill applies: this is an alpha, some things will be broken, your home is at risk if something goes wrong, it might run off with your partner, don’t blame us if it eats your kittens. Otherwise, though, all should be fine.

Latest changes:

Playback

  • Music: Display album duration in info dialog. Album duration can be used in smart playlists in the same way as for songs
  • Music: Read tags and and album art from music files served from an http(s) server
  • Music: Fix list view of files containing multiple streams
  • Feature: Audio decoder addons can now pass more information on Kodi (album, year, notes …)
  • Audio decoder addons can now pass more information to Kodi (album, year, notes …)

Subtitles

  • ASS: Fixed timestamp overlapping overlays

Skin/Look-and-Feel

  • Improvements to both music and video library artwork
    • Better “out the box” behaviour, optionally use all image files found in media folders
    • Artwork levels – max, basic, custom, none
    • GUI settings for custom configuration of whitelists (replacing awkward editing of advancedsettings.xml)
  • Redesigned SeekBar that will auto-hide when video playback is paused

Platform Specifics

  • Apple TV
    • Fix Kodi crash on start after a manual install with dpkg -i command (jailbroken devices only)
    • Fix TopShelf feature after a manual install with dpkg -i command (jailbroken devices only except Unc0verTV devices, needs investigation)
    • Fix missing thumbs on TopShelf items

Python/Addons

  • Fix scripts/plugins not being notified of abortRequest intents on app close
  • Deprecate xbmc.translatepath in favour of xbmcvfs.translatepath towards convergence with the binary addon API
  • Broken/deprecated add-ons are now highlighted in the add-on list, and you’re now prompted when you try to activate one
  • Fix: Prevent VFS addon changes (update, disable and uninstall) if in use
  • Fix: VFS addon problem, where Kodi needed a restart before showing a newly-installed version
  • Binary addon system revised to ensure higher security in data exchange between addon and Kodi (only inputstream missing)
  • Revised binary add-on system documentation for outside developers (only inputstream missing)
  • Internal binary add-on settings dialogs cleaned up, plus updated help text (audioencoder.kodi.builtin.aacaudioencoder.kodi.builtin.wmascreensaver.xbmc.builtin.dim)

If you’re bold, brave (and possibly a wearing a red shirt), you can get Alpha 2 from here. Again, though, please – and adopting a more serious note – expect some breakage, and don’t use this as your daily installation unless you know how to get things working again. If you do make the move and install it, however, please do share your experiences back with us so we can really get going on those bugs.

As usual – well, it is open source – you can see what’s changed between v18 and this version here, and changes since Alpha 1 here.

Have fun!

Working From Home

In recent months, millions of businesses across the world have had to radically alter the way in which they work in order to run smoothly and safely. For many companies, this means a large number of their employees have started working from home.

Fortunately, working from home has proven to have numerous benefits, from eliminating tiresome commutes to boosting productivity and morale in the workplace. However, it is also important to remember that not everyone is equipped for office work at their home, especially in regards to technology. After all, many people have set up their ‘offices in dining rooms and bedrooms during this time. Therefore, we’ve put together a list of useful technologies you can purchase to make working from that much easier!

Working From Home

  1. An external Hard drive

Since you are working from home, you may be required to carry out your usual day-to-day activities on your home computer or laptop. As this was previously used for leisure purposes only, it may not have the same capabilities or storage as your workplace tech. As a result, load times for documents may be slower and you may struggle to access certain files. One thing you can do in order to combat this is to purchase an external hard drive. An external hard drive can:

  • Backup documents
  • Store a range of files
  • Improve the speed of your pc/laptop

There are a range of external hard drives on offer, so it is important that you consider all the options available for purchasing. Check out this online guide that helps you find the best external hard drive for Mac equipment.

  1. Some Headphones

Working from home can easily result in getting distracted – whether that is due to working in proximity to your sofa and TV, or family members who may also be working from home – therefore it is also important that you invest in a set of noise-cancelling headphones to minimise distractions. They are also particularly useful during online meetings via zoom or Google meets.

  1. A Webcam

Another useful piece of technology to incorporate into your home office is a webcam. When we cannot have meetings in person, video conferences are the next best thing as you can see the person you are talking to and connect on a deeper level. However, some webcams, especially those on older devices don’t offer the best quality. Therefore, you may benefit from purchasing a new webcam device to use for meetings.

If you don’t fancy buying a webcam that you’ll only use for work, you can use a canon DSLR as a webcam on Windows devices

  1. Software

When working from home, you also need to ensure your computer/laptop hosts the necessary software required for you to do your job. Office 365 is a good starting point, providing you with access to word documents, presentations and spreadsheets with the click of a button. You may also want to ensure you have access to cloud storage apps, cloud storage apps which mean you can safely access important files wherever you are.

This is just a quick blog post to tell you about a presentation that might be of interest. Glenn Guy (Aussie Addons) is giving a presentation on Meetup this Thursday, 24th September, at 18:00 AEST (07:00 UTC) for the Sydney Video Technology group. It’s featuring some pretty big names in the Video VOD world.

It came about because the host – Jeremy, the Associate Director of Video Delivery at Optus Sports – made contact on Twitter wondering how the Optus Sport addon was playing back SSAI when their Android app couldn’t yet. Matt Huismann (another contributor) explained that Glenn had added X-discontinuity support for live streams into Inputstream Adaptive, and that IA and Kodi was doing all the work. We put him in contact with Glenn – and now Glenn is doing a presentation about it.

He will be mainly talking about Kodi + Inputstream Adaptive + Disney addon (how he added features to IA to accomplish that)

Anyone can join the Meetup to watch:

You can also watch on Twitch if they run out of capacity on Meetup:

TVZion Has Been Shut Down

TVZion app has been shut down by the developer and the application is no longer working. Also if you visit the official website for the streaming application you will ve redirected to a Pastebin post. In the post the developer of the TVZion application with a brief message sents his goodbye to his community. The link to the Pastebin post can be found here: https://pastebin.com/raw/eCRtjyum

Hi everyone.

Looking at the recent events, to protect the moderators, I have decided to shut down the app.

ZC members, thank you for your continued support all this time and I am truly sorry if I have let you down.

But we need to protect the moderators that have provided this community so much support selflessly for absolutely nothing in return and at least as the developer it is now my duty to return the favor and ensure their well being.

It has been such a pleasure to have you all as a community but it is time for me say good bye.

What has happened

Following the recent news that several moderators of the team behind TVZion app have been reportedly served with cease-and-desist notices by the global anti-piracy coalition Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), the developer has now decided to terminate the application. Just a few days ago, the same developer insisted that he was unaware of all that had happened to the moderators of the application and that TVZion was gonna continue as normal. But looking back, it all seems that this was not the truth.

The cease-and-desist notice that the moderators received stated that “Within ten (10) days of the Effective Date [REDACTED] shall transfer the domains Zionapp.live, Tvzion.me, Tvzionapk.com, and Tvzion.io, and all trademarks related to the Infringing Service, to the Rightsholders at no cost, and shall execute whatever documents and take whatever actions are necessary to effect the transfer”. And guess what, it has been exactly 10 days and the app is no longer working as well as the official website has been also taken down.

TVZion has been shut down

Taking it a step further

TVZion was one of the best alternatives of Terrarium app that was also shut down in the past. But the developer of TVZion has taken a step further creating a paid subscription called “TVZion Club” offering better streaming experience and unlimited access to practically …everything. That didn’t pass unnoticed by the big studios and the rest is now history.

For someone that is a member of this community this is no news. Streaming apps come and go and as always, for one app that is taken down, more follow.

What TVZion shut down means for a user

From a user prespective there is no reason to be worried. Usually in these cases no users are prosecuted. And in being honest, there must be millions of users just for this app. That practically makes it impossible for anyone to prosecute a simple user. But as always with third party applications and streaming applications we always suggest that users use a VPN in order to protect themselves. You should always protect your online identity, especially when you decide to stream certain content. And my personal suggestion is to never pay for such applications. You should never give your information by paying for a grey area service.

For more developments about TVZion and streaming applications in general we will continue to inform with newer posts.

LibreELEC 9.2.5 (Leia) has arrived based upon Kodi v18.8 only for RPi4. This release only contains a fix for RPi4.
There is no 9.2.5 for every other platform.

Changes since 9.2.4:

  • firmware fix for RPi4 (blank screen at start)

Kodi 19 Matrix:

We have currently no plans yet to create an official Alpha release of LE10 with the Alpha version of Kodi 19. Due the drawn out release cycle of Kodi and the experiences from the past few years we are waiting a bit longer to avoid major problems. Nightly builds could be downloaded like usual, that includes the latest unstable development snapshot of LE10/Kodi19.

Change for Raspberry 4:

With LE 9.2 and later you need to add hdmi_enable_4kp60=1 to your config.txt if you want to use 4k output at the RPi4. Before you needed hdmi_enable_4k=1 that is now deprecated.

If you experience problems, please open an thread at our forum. You can also open an ticket at our Github issue tracker.

Upgrading

On first boot the Kodi media database will be upgraded. Depending on your hardware and media collection size this could take several minutes. Please be patient.

Hidden Album iOS & iPadOS 14 beta 5

Any app that has a widget and requests location data will now show a new option “While using the app or widgets” when requesting location access. This will provide the widget with your location data for up to 15 minutes.

Small businesses can find it challenging to compete with more established brands all over the world. They might have a fantastic product or service, yet customers will always flock to something more familiar and convenient, which is why we see Amazon continue to dominate the eCommerce industry with little sign of slowing down.

However, just because it’s unlikely your business will ascend to such heights, at least now, this doesn’t mean you can’t still focus on the potential for growing your business, and the best way to do this is by considering which tech can help boost your fortunes.

Technology has always been something that enables companies to take the next step. With such a versatile range of potential systems and software available, it’s time your business embraced them, too. Here are ten ways technology will improve your small business.

Communication

You don’t need reminding that communication is an essential part of the business world. With a small business, you could argue that it’s even more crucial compared to more established companies.

Without communication, there is perpetual uncertainty about what is happening at any point. Staff do not know their roles and managers don’t know what is happening on the main floor. With a small business, you have the benefit of having most, if not every, member of staff in one place so that you can communicate with ease.

Instant messaging services can enhance this, as you can quickly shoot off a message without disrupting your workflow, or the workflow of anyone else. It’s more reliable than writing an email, and also more informal, which is something you may want to promote within the office.

Productivity

Anything that takes too long to do will hinder productivity. It’s not just the action itself, but also the before and after that can affect the workday.

Staff will often get into a groove with their work. They are not working too quickly but also not too slowly. Instead, they are working at a decent pace. However, this can be disrupted if they need to do some menial task, such as change an appointment date or make a post on your social media pages. You can embrace the wonders of in-office automation to help overcome this problem.

Automation will eliminate these menial tasks and put them in the hands of the technology. All you need to do is set up a system that automatically makes changes or posts for you. With this, your staff won’t need to stop what they’re doing, allowing them to remain productive and on-task throughout the day.

Finances

Finances are one of the biggest worries for a small business. You don’t have the mighty budget that larger companies have, so you’ve got to be more careful with your spending.

This is where technology can boost your fortunes and come in handy. While you may need to spend a little to invest in reliable tech, the benefits can be remarkable. With proper investment, you can identify areas of the business that are not always necessary. This can include using outsourcing for your tech support and content creation.

A financial bot, as it were, can also minimize the risk of discrepancies in your finances, which will help protect you from the wrath of the taxman. No matter how good you might be with numbers, you’re also human, and humans make mistakes. A financial bot will not do this, and it will do it quicker than you ever could, too.

Marketing

Another significant worry for small businesses is spreading the word and raising awareness about their brand. Marketing is the way for you to do this, but the sphere of marketing is always changing.

In the past, people learned about you through word of mouth, and then there were things such as billboards, TV ads, radio placements. In the modern world, it’s about social media ads or the occasional spot on a podcast.

A company that fails to embrace the positives that can come from social media engagement, regardless of what you think of the trend, is at risk of falling behind significantly. Take advantage of the brand personality tropes that have become popular, but also don’t be afraid to use segmentation through automation to target potential customers more efficiently.

Collaboration

A collaborative environment is a surefire recipe for success. Still, old ways of this collaboration, such as sticking a team in a room and hoping they work it out, are not what anyone looks for anymore.

And so they shouldn’t. The evolution of technology has made these awkward scenarios something best left in the past, and it’s not something that any self-resp[ecting business should consider using any more. Instead, the likes of cloud technology and document editing in real-time can boost a collaborative nature and also simplify procedures.

You should expect your staff to be busy the majority of the time, and this is why the idea of dragging them into a meeting to discuss plans isn’t always ideal. With tech, you can enable them to tackle such tasks on their own time and trust them to work alongside coworkers and clients to achieve great things.

Customer Service

Customer service is crucial for all businesses, but as a small business, you must make a good impression and deliver top quality service to your customers. If you fail to do so, they will look for other companies that offer the same service, which can severely affect your profits.

But what do tech and customer service have in common? Live chatbots on your website are a great way to put them directly in touch with your agents, giving them the chance to ask questions and get answers immediately. However, some customers may not want to speak directly to bots, instead preferring a real person. You can also use social media messenger services to do this, and it will alleviate any fears your customers may have. Likewise, developing an app will enable your customers to use your service wherever they are, rather than battle with a mobile site.

Speaking of websites, you must do everything you can to keep your customers happy on your website, and if this means investing in a professional developer, then so be it. The average customer will typically wait just three seconds before abandoning a slow-loading webpage, so you must make sure you optimize your site correctly to ensure they can navigate your website with ease.

Engagement

There are a variety of ways that you can improve engagement, and this can include everything from interesting social media posts to content creation. The better your technology, the better this content will be, so it might be worth considering how programs and software can boost customer engagement.

If you like to make blog posts, you must ensure that everything is written with correct grammar and spelling and flows appropriately, too. While anyone can write, not everyone can write well, and a poorly written article is easy to spot from a mile off. Use grammar checking programs such as Grammarly or ProWritingAid to make your writing more clear and concise.

Conversely, you may prefer making videos, especially if your business is more action-based. It’s not enough to record footage on your phone, so think about investing in better equipment to make your videos stand out, and also use quality editing software to provide a professional appeal. While you may not have the budget to compete with larger businesses, you can still get creative in your video campaigns and give both current and potential customers a reason to enquire about your brand.

Training

Not many people enjoy training, but if you want to maintain high performance and allow your employees to advance their careers, training sessions are essential. Despite this, it isn’t always convenient to put everybody in a single space to train them. They will have other things to do, they might need to leave early, or they may just not want to be there at all.

To overcome this, you can consider video conferencing solution comparison options. Rather than force everyone into a single room, it allows you to create training materials for them to view in their own time. This puts less pressure on them to attend seminars and sessions but still gives them the option to learn more if they want to.

It won’t disrupt their workday, and they can pause the video if they need to. Furthermore, you could also offer live video training for remote workers, which enables them to ask questions along the way if they have any queries.

Best In Business

It can often feel overwhelming to be a business owner, especially if you run a smaller company. This is why technology can assist you and improve your fortunes. It will make every aspect of your workday more manageable, and this will ensure you are less stressed and more prepared to take on the next big task. Too many businesses are reluctant to embrace tech, but these are the ones who fall behind, so make sure you do not get caught in the same trap.

So, here we go. Hot on the heels of what is intended to be the final release in the 18.x “Leia” series, it’s time to give you good people a taste of things to come. So, with no further ado, we’d like to present the first Alpha releases of Kodi 19.x “Matrix”.

This is a major release, so, as you’d expect, it comes with many new features. However, it will inevitably cause problems for some people, which is why we’ll go through a more traditional Alpha/Beta/Release Candidate model. As such, then, please be aware that installing this will inevitably break things, and we’d really like your help at that point to identify the problems and get them fixed.

So, all that aside… what’s actually changed?

Audio/Music

  • Improved handling of multi-disc CD sets and box sets
  • Additional metadata tags
  • Improved handling of album release dates
  • New setting to open music fullscreen/visualisation window automatically when playback is started
  • A new, Matrix-inspired music visualisation is now available to install – great care has been put into making this perform well on lower-end systems

Video

  • Software decoding of the AV1 CODEC

Subtitles

  • Subtitle opacity can now be changed
  • New dark grey colour for subtitles

Estuary Skin

  • Redesign of the music fullscreen/visualisation window to match other fullscreen windows – allows fanart and visualisations to be shown without coloured overlays
  • Additional media info flags added to music fullscreen/visualisation window info display
  • The default Playlist view now uses the Widelist view format with options on the sideblade menu as in other areas of the skin
  • A new “Now Playing” view added for music playback, showing media details for both any selected song in the playlist and those for any currently playing song

Games

  • iOS now supports game controllers (Xbox/PlayStation/other supported Bluetooth controllers)

Platform Specifics

  • Darwin (Apple) platforms:
    • Objective-C code migrated from manual memory management to ARC
  • iOS:
    • Added showing total/free space
    • Kodi log can now be shared using native sharing sheet
    • Kodi GUI is no longer obscured on devices with notch
  • macOS:

  • EPG performance and memory usage optimisations

Network

  • Improved information around the security implications of enabling external interfaces
  • Added default-on switch to require a password for the web interface
  • Kodi will now enforce the origin of installed add-ons and their dependencies. This has been implemented to prevent third party repositories from overwriting code of unrelated add-ons, which was the cause of numerous error reports in the past.
  • Improved support around official repos, allowing users some safeguards when installing private repositories

Addons

  • Probably the biggest change: with this release, we move to Python 3 for addons (see note below).
  • Kodi will now enforce the origin of installed addons and their dependencies. This has been implemented to prevent third party repositories from overwriting code of unrelated add-ons, which was the cause of numerous error reports in the past.

Due to the discontinuation of Python 2, Kodi now utilises Python 3 for addons. Because of this change, this update might disable addons where a compatible version isn’t available, although these will be reactivated as soon as their authors provide new versions. The list of Kodi Matrix compatible addons available from the official repository is growing by the week, but not everything has been ported over yet.

If you want to take the plunge, you can get Alpha 1 from here. Again, though, please: expect some breakage, don’t use this as your daily installation unless you know how to get things working again, and please share your experiences back with us so we can really get going on those bugs.

As usual – well, it is open source – you can see what’s changed between v18 and v19 here. It’s a long list…
