ROKU 2019 Lineup

Roku has officially presented to the public the Roku 2019 lineup of streaming devices. The two most popular devices by Roku are the Roku Ultra and the revamped Roku Express. Both are popular for different reasons since they are also prices on the two extremes.

ROKU Express +

Starting at $29.99 the Roku Express is the most affordable Roku device and is intended for the first time users that get in touch with this new world. It can only stream in HD, so no 4K. This version is smaller even than the previous version, which quite frankly was already small.

ROKU Ultra 2019

The Ultra on the other hand looks exactly the same as the previous model and it is priced for $99.99. Not that pricey for the flagship device of Roku. On the inside though, now is powered by a faster quad-core CPU and more memory. The company states that the Roku Ultra is 17 percent faster when launching channels and up to 30 percent when loading apps. Also the remote has changed a little by introducing 2 fully-customizable shortcut buttons (buttons 1 and 2).

On the back of the device we find an Ethernet port, microSD slot and USB port as well. The “lost remote” button is also present which is beloved by a lot of users.

Roku Ready To Extend Overseas

While Roku’s popularity goes through the roof right now in the US, they didn’t received the same attention overseas. That is about to change since Roku is determined to extend their global presence. The new Roku Express, Premiere and Streaming Stick are coming to Latin America and the UK as a first attempt. More will also follow.

Roku 2019 Lineup

Roku OS 9.2 new voice capabilities

  • Set sleep timers on Roku TVs: Roku TV customers can use their voice remote or Roku mobile app to quickly set a sleep timer on their TV by saying things like “Go to sleep at 11 p.m.”
  • Search by movie quotes: Enjoy finding movie results by searching for the top quotes from thousands of popular movies across the Roku platform.
  • 4K in Roku search: Use Roku Voice to say “4K movies” to see results for a variety of popular 4K movies. Entering a text search for “4K” will now return results including the 4K Movies & TV Zone.
  • Support for Roku Media Player: Customers who use the Roku Media Player to play their personal music, movies and photos can now use Roku Voice to find, play and control stored files by using commands such as “Play,” “Skip,” and more.
  • Control multiple Roku devices with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant: Customers who use Alexa-enabled devices and/or Google Assistant to control their Roku device can now control multiple Roku devices in their homeDirect-to-playback. “Play Brooklyn Nine Nine.” Hulu opens and starts playing immediately.

Roku vs Android TV vs Apple vs Amazon

It is getting always harder to compete in the living room set top box each day. With the already established Android TV lineups which keeps growing and receiving a lot of love from the big boys and Amazon, the addition of Disney+ and Apple+ and a mix of other players, the game for the TV Box will be a hard one to compete. But that is all for the best of the consumer and I personally love it. Google already plans to release Google Stadia to the Android TV, Apple is also ready to launch Apple Arcade on the Apple TV and who knows what else should we expect in the year 2020 that looks that will be the year of the TV Box / Set Top Box.

Xiaomi Mi Box S 4K HDR Android TV Box Review & Benchmark

The Xiaomi Mi Box S is the successor of the previous Android TV Box best seller, the Xiaomi Mi Box 3. The Mi Box S, also called Xiaomi Mi Box 4 in China, is an updated but yet very similar version of the previous model. It comes to fill in the gap between the NVIDIA Shield TV and the Amazon FireTV Stick. With it’s price and performance, it does exactly that. Offers a great alternative as an Android TV OS device, with a built-in ChromeCast UHD and great 4K HDR performance on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Kodi, Hulu, Youtube, Plex, etc.

The Xiaomi runs Android TV, and unlike the Android mobile OS, this particular platform doesn’t have a thousand different micro-variations depending on manufacturer. Android TV is almost identical whether you run it on a NVIDIA Shield TV or a Sony Bravia TV or as in our case, a Mi Box S. In the particular the Xiaomi Mi Box S is powered by Android 8.1.0 Oreo out of the box.

Xiaomi Mi Box S 4K HDR Android TV Box 8.1 Oreo

With a good score on Antutu v6, unfortunately the 3D engine of Antutu version 7 kept crashing on the Xiaomi Mi Box S. It got an average of just below 35000 and on GeekBench it scored 645 on single-core and 1804 on multi-core.

Xiaomi Mi Box S 4K HDR Android TV Box Antutu Benchmark

Great also the performance of the Dual Band WiFi 2.4G and 5G ac of the Xiaomi Box S maxing out my internet speed 180 – 20 MB.

Overall it has a great performance, superb 4K playback on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video which you have to sideload in order to install it but make sure to install the Android TV version (not the one for the mobiles). Also on KODI 18 Leia it will play any kind of format 4K UHD without issues. The response of the device is always excellent and overall you will have a more than enjoyable experience.

You can get the Xiaomi Mi Box S with a special discount by using the coupon DMiBoxS for a lower price $53.99 ($16 OFF!) from: http://shrsl.com/1f8jr

Now you can get the Xiaomi MI Android TV (Official International Version) on a coupon sale for the low price of just $66.99 / €55.54 / £49.17 and with free world-wide shipping by using the discount coupon TOPCXM3. It is one of the best Android TV devices you can get right now with great quality and excellent performance. Running on Android TV OS comes with a unique, small in size design and an excellent remote control with voice control. Of course the design similarities with the Apple TV, the Amazon Fire TV and the NVIDIA Shield TV can not pass unnoticed but that is exactly the selling point of this device by Xiaomi. A direct competitor to those streaming devices, with no restrictions and with a very interesting price!1479174385641219

Spec-wise the Xiaomi Mi Android TV may not seem what you exactly expect from a top Android TV Box. Quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU clocked at 2.0Ghz, a Penta-core Mali 450 GPU, 2GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. But everything combined together work absolutely in perfect synch. In fact it is one of the smoothest Android TV devices in the range of under $100 whether you just want to use it as a Media Center or in order to play games! It also supports Dual Band WiFi b/g/n/ac with an internal antenna, an HDMI 2.0 port for real 4K at 60 frames per second, an optical / SPDIF output, 1 X USB 2.0 port and an AV port in case you have an older TV or a projector.

1471675166504167

The included bluetooth remote control is fantastic. It has built-in voice commands so you remote control the Xiaomi Mi Android TV just by talking to it, a feature that only some devices have like the NVIDIA Shield and the Amazon Fire TV. Also being a Bluetooth remote is also much better and more than the necessary in order to control every aspect of your device. The included AAA batteries is also something we are not used to see in most devices on the market.

Also when using KODI 17.6 the Xiaomi Mi Android TV performs in an exceptional way. Everything works as it should and even on 4K playback at 60 frames per second the device didn’t experience any kind of problems, just flawless playback! The forth-coming version of KODI Leia 18 is also supported and although it is not out officially yet, it has also a great performance on the device. When playing Android games you will also enjoy your experience and since you have unlimited access to the Google’s Android TV Play Store dedicated section with tons of fantastic titles to choose from, combined also to a Xiaomi Gamepad (sold separately but in my opinion is also one of the best gamepads for an Android TV Box or Firestick) you will get top gaming experience! Netflix is also fully supported meaning you will get the best possible quality, unlike most of the other devices in the market.

HOW TO INCREASE INTERNAL STORAGE ON NVIDIA SHIELD TV, very easy tutorial! All the SHIELD TV users can increase their internal storage space for apps and games by setting up USB drives (hard disk drives or flash drives through USB 3.0) or even SD Cards to replace their current internal storage.

The process is really easy and is worth doing in order to get the most out of your NVIDIA Shield TV.

benefits-of-4kGreat news in the streaming community, the NVIDIA Shield TV will get the new 3.2 firmware update in the next days with new, exciting features! More 4K content with new & old apps for the best 4K streaming device. Netflix will be getting also 4K HDR support (starting with the new Marco Polo TV Show), Youtube an exceptional 4K resolution at 60 FPS and both apps will support in-app voice search! But 4K HDR is also making it’s way into gaming; the first game with HDR on the Shield TV will be Paragon.

In the audio department the Shield TV was also already ahead of every competitor. Now things get even better since the new firmware will introduce the Dolby Atmos Pass-Through (TrueHD+Atmos) that already is being supported on KODI, SPMC, MX Player and soon on Plex as well!

Also, we have an important CEC update that was missing, the CEC TV-off support. When CEC is enabled on the device and your TV supports it, the TV is automatically powered on when you wake your Shield and now also powered off.

SHIELD-Powerful_Media_Server-1920x1080Lastly, what came as a big surprise is the new Plex Media Server integration into the NVIDIA Shield TV PRO (that’s the 500GB version). In other words, your Shield TV PRO can be transformed into your next standalone Plex Media Server! The Shield with it’s phenomenal NVIDIA Tegra® X1 can now host the Plex Server so no NAS (Networked Attached Storage) or remote server is needed. Also, HD capable NAS are really expensive (yeah, really!) the Shield TV Plex Server on the other hand will be able to support hardware-accelerated video transcoding (H.264, MPEG2 and HEVC) and with multiple, simultaneous streams! You can even watch a 4K stream or play a game on your Shield while someone else on your network on the same exact time watches a movie from the Plex Server of the Shield on a mobile device, computer or even TV! Crazy, no? No, it’s NVIDIA!

ShieldTV PRO NASBut what if you already have a NAS device? No worries, you can still connect it to your Shield and use the power of the device in order to transcode your streams. You can extend your library even more, simply by connecting a usb external disk drive and the Shield has USB 3.0, remember? Those are features that we saw until today only on PC setup. Pretty amazing…

If after reading everything, you want to know more about this amazing device, feel free to revisit my review on it: Review of the NVIDIA Shield TV by Dimitrology.

Which Android TV Box Should I Buy?

Which TV Box Should You Buy In 2023

A lot of people keep asking me which is the best TV Box or what TV Box should they buy. Well the answer to that question is not that easy because everyone has different needs and also different price range. So let’s try to put an order into this question.

This list is always updated when new, worth mentioning devices become available so make sure you visit it again in the future!

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick (Firestick)

Amazon Firestick New

US:https://amzn.to/32bL5aB UK:http://amzn.to/1UlJIzd

This is without doubt the most cheap device and also the slowest device but comes handy because of the size and easiness to use. When it comes to KODI it performs pretty decently but if you want to install the latest build, you may struggle. It comes with an excellent remote control, the closed ecosystem from Amazon which you can by-pass by sideloading apps (even though it may be a pain in the ass!). There is no keyboard so you may have to purchase one. Decent but nothing special, just the essential. My opinion, invest 10$ more and get something better or if you want to stick with Amazon, go for the 4K version which is a little more powerful and handles heat better.

  • Amazon Fire TV 4K

US:https://amzn.to/32bL5aB UK:http://amzn.to/1UlJR5P

The next solution from Amazon. Overall is a decent box with excellent build quality. Specs-wise we find a Quad Core CPU (a dual-core at 2.0Ghz & another dual-core CPU at 1.6Ghz), a PowerVR GX6250 GPU, 2Gb of RAM and Dual BAnd Wifi. The only downside is the 4K supported is “just” at 30 fps when the S905X and S912 CPU from Amlogic can deliver easily 4K at 60 fps (fps= frames per second). If you need this device for Amazon Prime content you will be very satisfied. But when it comes to KODI you may look elsewhere at this price and specs. Excellent remote control with voice control (Alexa).

  • Beelink GT1

Beelink GT1 Mini

INT:Gearbest.com/GT1 EU:GeekBuyiingEUROPE/GT1

Powered by an Amlogic S905X2, a Mali G-31 GPU, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, this Android TV Box features also Dual Band WiFi 2.4G and 5G, a Gigabit Ethernet port, USB 3.0 and HDMI 2.0a for real 4K at 60Hz. Pretty impressive for the price and also the specs on such a small device in 2019. It has some lacks, for example there is no Netflix HD/4K and the YouTube app has some issues which can be fixed though by using the Youtube app by Beelink in their App Market. The remote is very good and if you want a device just for KODI and streaming APK, you have a winner here. You can watch my Beelink GT1 Mini review here.

  • Mecool KM9 PRO

US:Amazon Link UK:Amazon Link INT: https://bit.ly/307ANdp

Also powered by an Amlogic S905X2, an ARM Mali G-31, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage this Android TV 9.0 Pie device offers a great overall performance! Snappy interface and multitask, it has a very fast Dual Band WiFi 2.4G and 5G, supports 4K HDR and it is certified by Google with Google Assistant working with the excellent remote control and Chromecast built-in. Also Youtube comes with the Android TV version and it supports the VP9 codec up to 4K / UHD. In my opinion lacks just in two things, it isn’t certified by Netflix so no Netflix HD / 4K unfortunately and the Ethernet port is 100M. For my review on the Mecool KM9 PRO click here.

  • Xiaomi MI BOX S

xiaomi mi box s best 2019

Fantastic Android TV despite the average specs has a brilliant performance and does exactly what it promises and more! Supports 4K HDR @ 60 FPS and has great audio quality as well. If you are looking for an Android TV device and spending for an NVIDIA Shield is simply too much, this is the best alternative! Now it also supports voice commands from the remote control and comes with the default Google TV launcher as any Android TV device. Powered by an Amlogic S905X and 2GB of RAM it only has 8GB of local storage but you can always use external hard drive. Lacks of an Ethernet port but the WiFi is Dual Band b/g/n/ac 3.Ghz and 5Ghz with great performance. Amazing value for money, highly recommended for anyone that wants to watch NETFLIX in 4K / Netflix HD.

  • Beelink GT KING

Beelink GT-King Android Tv 9 Box

INT:https://dimitrology.com/recommends/gtking/ EU:GeekBuying/GTKING

Call it also the Benchmark Monster, this Android 9 TV Box has an incredible performance with top specs! It is the only TV Box that fills the gap towards the NVIDIA Shield, comes with the flagship 64bit CPU by Amlogic S922X which is a Hexa-core CPU (6 cores). The GPU is an ARM Mali-G52 MP6 GPU which is great not only for media but also for gaming. Then he find 4GB of DDR4 RAM, 64GB of internal storage, Dual Band WiFi b/g/n/ac 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz,1000M Ethernet port, 2 X USB 3.0, 1 X USB 2.0, SD Card Slot and HDMI 2.1 for 4K UHD at 75Hz! With one word: powerhouse! The default launcher is it’s weakest point but that you can easily fix by downloading a different one from the already pre-installed Google Play Store! A great plus in my opinion also the excellent air remote control that also supports voice search. You can watch my review of the Beelink GT KING here.

  • Apple TV 4K (ATV 4K)

Apple tv 4k ATV4K

Call me paranoid but this amazing device when it comes to hardware is also the most expensive to maintain. You can watch almost anything but with a higher price than any other device. In order to install KODI you will need to pay or if you are a very advanced user you may install it for a little less since you still need to pay for a developer certificate. It is sad that such a powerful device with great specs and features isn’t that supported by apps and games. And yeah, that price in totally Apple style is a little too high for what it has to offer. If you want to install KODI on an Apple TV / Apple TV 4K watch this video tutorial with easy-to-follow steps. My personal recommendation, is if you are not an Apple fan-boy and do not care about the Apple Eco-system, there is no reason to buy the device. Nice hardware but lacks third-party support, especially for free.

  • Nvidia Shield TV

NEW NVIDIA SHIELD

US:http://amzn.to/2saK4OP UK:http://amzn.to/2kjlmLd CAN:http://amzn.to/2rMa9Dv

Without doubt the top of the category! Powered by the best CPU, the Tegra X1, the Shield TV is capable of flawless 4K HDR playback,  has 3gb of RAM, comes with the most powerful GPU with 256 cores and delivers some exclusive features like PC gaming, voice command, Netflix in 4K HDR, Youtube in 4K, Plex Media Server with hardware transcoding. Even if it uses Android and not a KODI-based OS, the performance in KODI is outstanding! You can install any build you want, the playback is outstanding, it comes with an excellent remote control (the best in the category) and there is a Pro version with 500gb! For gaming is simply the best, comes with a fantastic gamepad for experiencing the best games from Google Play Store and the NVIDIA GeForce Now even the most demanding! For my review on the NVIDIA Shield click here.
