Add To Home Screen Sideloaded Apps On Android TV (Missing Apps)

If you decide to sideload apps, meaning install apps that cannot be found on the Android TV Play Store, sometimes you will not find them. In the specific, you will not find the app icon on your Android TV home screen, you will not even find the sideloaded application inside your App drawer. In this tutorial, I am gonna show you how to add to your Android TV Home Screen any app that you sideloaded.

Why sideload apps? Even though the Android TV Play Store has a lot of applications, there are a lot more applications that are designed to be used on smartphones and tablets. So you will need to download and install them on your Android TV device (TV or streaming device like the Nvidia Shield TV, Mi Box S, etc.).

With the Nebula Manager application, which is a free app from Google Play Store, you can add a second row of apps, like the “Apps” row which comes by default on your launcher’s home screen. And if you never sideload apps, you can still add applications just for the easiness of having two rows of applications and games.

Just enter inside the settings and you can select whether you want to use the Full HD or the 4K videos. Also you can choose from the screensaver from the different Apple TV models: Apple TV 2019, Apple TV 2018, Apple TV 2017 and Apple TV 2015.

The only negative in my opinion is that the videos are always streamed from the Apple server. That means that you consume bandwidth when your device is in screensaver mode. Not an issue for me since I have a broadband connection but if your connection has data limits it may cause high traffic.

*Please note*: Aerial Dream streams videos constantly and will consume large amounts of bandwidth. Do not install on devices with limited network connectivity.

A screensaver for Android devices inspired on Apple TV’s video screensaver

Currently the displayed videos are the exact same used by Apple TV. Though the videos are relatively small (below 200MB), it’s still recommended that you have an appropriate internet plan so that you do not incur in extra costs. Most home or WiFi connections should be ok, while mobile data could be a problem. The videos are hosted by Apple Inc. openly and without any sort of encryption or other form of protection, therefore this use is assumed to be legitimate.

Downloader App for Android TV devices like the Nvidia Shield TV, Xiaomi Mi Box, Sony TV, Philips, TCL, etc is back on the Google Play Store. But finding the Downloader app is a little tricky right now. So in this video I will show you how to easily find the Downloader app and install it on your Android TV device. And if it is the first time you use the Downloader application and you are new to the Android TV world, I will also show you how to install an application, sideload to be exact. In this example I’m gonna use the Puffin TV Browser, the fixed version that can still download files on your Android TV device.

Google Dislikes Sideload

The thing is that Google doesn’t want users to sideload apps anymore. They made it clear that they do not like apps that give users the ability to download apps outside from the Google Play Store for Android TV. That means that also the new version of Downloader may be at risk. My personal advice, hurry up to get it before it’s gone again!

This is the updated version of the Puffin TV Browser Downloads Fix on Android TV devices like the Nvidia Shield TV, Xiaomi Mi Box, Mecool KM9 Pro, Sony Android TV, etc. I have done a video on the past but the method was using Downloader, an app that is not available in the Google Play Store for Android TV. So in this video we are using a different method that works great as of November 2019. Get rid of the annoying notification on Puffin TV “Download Error not supported download is not supported on this device yet” and get the ability to download files back on your Android TV device, now!

How to Fix the Download not Supported Issue on Puffin TV Browser for Android TV November 2019 update:

  • First we need to uninstall Puffin TV Browser
  • Then we need to disable the Auto updates, we do not want Puffin TV to update again to the latest version
  • Next, download the Xplore file manager from Google Play on your Android TV device. Log into Google Drive from “Web Transfer”.
  • Download Google Drive on your smartphone and log in
  • If you do not have a smartphone, log into Google Drive from your Computer
  • Now go to https://dimitrology.com from your smartphone or computer and download Puffin TV Browser from the download APK section
  • Share the apk on Google Drive
  • Back on your Android TV device, open Xplore and the apk will be available in order to install.
  • FIXED!

With this method we install a previous version of Puffin TV Browser when the download function was still available. That is why we need to disable auto-updates from Play Store so that the app doesn’t update again.
