VPN service
« on: June 23, 2016, 11:51:59 AM »
A VPN or Virtual Private Network is a method used to add security and privacy to private and public networks, like WiFi Hotspots and the Internet. VPNs are most often used by corporations to protect sensitive data. But also come handy when you want to hide your activity from your ISP, government, etc.

Let's suppose that you like Torrent, P2P applications, or other uses that your ISP is blocking you or you just want to hide your IP. In those situation a VPN come handy and by using it you are safe!

The one I am using that I find fastest since it has a lot of different servers available in most countries and also can use it to access content that is restricted in my country (example Hulu or the US Netflix, NBA.com, ...) is IPVanish: https://www.ipvanish.com/?a_aid=567b0c15dd69e&a_bid=48f95966

Another excellent VPN service but with less servers is PIA: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/buy-vpn/dimitrology

If you are not interested in privacy but you just want to access geo-blocked content, bypass regional restrictions online and unblock content then you can use a SmartDNS service. The one I have tested from my travels and is working greatly (also faster than a VPN) is OverPlay: http://overplay.net/?a_aid=567b0c15dd69e&a_bid=3ea62643

Both links are also affiliations, by selecting them you help me and the Channel/Forum. You can select not to use my affiliation of course but your support is greatly appreciated!

Hi atec,
I have experience with NordVPN I also used it for a while and it was ok. I haven't got it into my recommendations because I had slow speed from my location but if it is fast for you, then it should be fine.  As long as security is related they do an awesome work too, I trust them.

No it's not. Except if you are using Plexus which uses torrents. I feel safer with a VPN for more than just KODI to be honest but it's not illegal streaming so you do not have to use a VPN, it's just a choice for more privacy ;)

Have you tried it lately it' been improved and is faster, for me it also offers the ultimate security with it's double vpn and onion options.   :)

Hi D, 1st think first, your build rocks, is there a forum that I can suggest changes? 2nd think VPN set up. I'm going to go with Nord VPN (with the 2 year upfront cost it works out one of the cheapest I can find). I've downloaded a 3 day free test and all looks good. However I'm using an Adroid box ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0718XXKS9/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and when I run a web browser it shows that my IP has changed when this is running, however when I run your Kodi build it the info under system it still show my old IP.  :-\
Is there any changes I need to make to your build to make it use the VPN?

Thanks in advance, and again thanks for the build!  ;D

Hi there, sorry for the late reply. The only change you may have to do is change the URL or dimitrology from http://dimitrology.com/repo to http://www.dimitrology.com/repo This doesn't happen with all VPN services but with some it can not redirect promptly. So if you have any errors use that instead. For the rest, everything will work as before just with a private connection.
